International Design Inspiration

Salone de Mobile may have come and gone, but the products showcased have real staying power, underscoring the importance of international design. Texture, color, material, and sheer creativity were on display. From emerging brands to established designers, unexpected partnerships and bold introductions, the designs delighted. Sophisticated home decor at its finest. The fair represents some of the best furniture, lighting, tabletop, kitchen and bath, and decorative accessories produced around the globe.

Below are some of our favorite international brands. Some exhibited their wares at the fair, others opened new storefronts in Milan, and others participated in installations that highlighted their inventiveness and dedication to style.

Agape — Since the '70’s, this Italian brand has been carefully crafting bathroom staples. Dedicated to environmentally-friendly production processes and distinguished design collaborations, they continually release beautiful bathroom decor. This year, they partnered with French architect Jean Nouvel on a collection of architectural washbasins and bathtubs made of marble. One of our favorite collections is Cenote designed by Patricia Urquiola. These pared down washbasins exude pure elegance!

B&B Italia — A leader of high-quality modern furniture, their timeless designs turn everyday rooms into eye-catching interiors. One of their most iconic designs, the Le Bambole armchair, celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Originally designed by architect Mario Bellini, the famed chair has been reimagined by Stella McCartney who upholstered the chair with a whimsical mushroom print made from eco-conscious fabric. The profile itself got a reboot. The 50th anniversary edition returns the silhouette to its fuller proportions and features a fleece-like upholstery available in eight colors.

Dolce & Gabbana Casa — The famed fashion house has a new home furnishings and accessories line. Opulent motifs and colorful patterns make their way onto furniture, home textiles, glassware, and ceramics. Their tableware collection is as daring as their fashion — animal prints, folkloric elements and iconic patterns abound. The pieces are perfect for making a statement tablescape.

Karimoku Case Study — Japan’s leading manufacturer of wooden furniture captures the reductive qualities of Japanese aesthetics — clean lines, simple forms, exceptional craftsmanship. The pieces are remarkable!

Kohler — This American kitchen and bath staple is an international sensation. As a global leader, they consistently launch dazzling plumbing products and fixtures, allowing for at-home, spa-like experiences.

Lodes — One of Europe’s leading designers and manufacturers of decorative lighting, the Venice-based company outshines with their contemporary creations. Balancing technical know-how with design prowess, their offering includes suspension, table, ceiling, wall, floor and outdoor lighting. Their Flar lamp, designed by Patrick Norguet, caught our eye. The blown glass diffuser sits atop a steel base in a simplistic configuration. Available in smokey colors, the lamp emits an ambient light that adds a soft touch to any room.

Pierre Frey — The French purveyor of traditional fabrics, wallpapers, carpets, rugs, and furniture, opened their first Milan showroom in the Brera Design District earlier this year, where they unveiled the Ruban collection, a design collaboration with Los Angeles-based furniture and lighting design studio, Estudio Persona. The geometric chairs and sofas are as playful as they are sturdy.

Ritzwell — This contemporary Japanese furniture manufacturer has impeccable taste. Their finely crafted sideboards, chairs, benches, and sofas perfectly balance form and function.

Game On! Trend Alert: Game Tables and Game Rooms

There’s no better way to entertain than with games. Billiards. Foosball. Ping Pong. Backgammon. Black Jack. Scrabble. No matter what age, or how many guests are coming over, games are the perfect pastime. And with this renewed interest in games, game rooms are making their way back into households across the nation.

Whether you want to convert an underutilized room into a dedicated play space or update your family room with a specialty game table to accommodate an impromptu night of fun, we’ve scoured the web and pulled together some of our favorite game room decor. From interior designers who’ve channeled their clients' inner child to furniture and industrial designers who’ve created eye-catching game tables that double as art pieces, we hope you are inspired to get your game on.

If you want a smart-looking gaming table, check out RS Barcelona. This Spain-based company offers football / foosball, ping pong, and pool tables, as well as outdoor game tables.

Another European furniture company that makes high-end game tables is Vismara Design Italy. In addition to luxury pool tables, they design poker tables and roulette tables, and many other game room accessories for private home entertainment.

And if you’re looking for something stateside that is basic yet stylish, Perigold, FAO Schwartz and Pottery Barn have a nice selection of ping pong tables. For luxury game tables that run the gamut from pool to table tennis, air hockey to shuffleboard, 11 Ravens has a sleek selection.

For those who are building a furniture collection or have a penchant for furniture as art, many collectible sites, such as 1st Dibs and Incollect, offer a wide variety of designer tables, including Harvey Probber, Arturo Pani, Impatia, and Raoul Guys. Many of these gaming tables are slightly lower than regular tables, creating a more relaxed, lounging posture — perfect for today’s contemporary lifestyle.

Curved Craze

Seems like everywhere we look, we are seeing curves. Sculptural architecture and staircases. Undulating carved ceilings and elliptical walls. Tulip chairs, curved couches, rounded coffee tables, and bulbous sofas. Arched bed frames and scalloped headboards. Organic-shaped mirrors and rugs. Not to mention the wonderful decorative accessories that feature soft corners and circular shapes.

The curved craze is an interior design trend that has staying power. It plays well across all design styles, in both sophisticated and quirky ways. These pieces work well in every room, and span residential, hospitality, and commercial properties alike.

Rounded furniture pieces date back to Ancient Greece where chair backs featured a gentle curve. The curved silhouette replaced Neolithic forms and went through many transformations over the centuries. Curves were further popularized with the Rococo, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mid-Century, and Modern movements.

Why is “the curve” making a comeback? Curved furniture pieces are like sculpture and will add interesting geometry to a space. Their silhouettes blend well with many different styles and break up the monotony of right angles. When used in architecture — either as an interior architectural detail like an arched doorway or spiral staircase, or as the actual form of a building — their presence makes a statement.

When paired with large-scale art, curved furniture can have a big impact. In the living room, curved pieces break up the space and cause interesting circulation that can take advantage of the best natural light, and a room’s good side. Low-profile teacup armchairs, as pairs or as a single piece, are a good addition to any area. With ample breathing room, these sculptural shapes can be enjoyed from all angles.

In the bedroom, curved silhouettes can create a soothing, tranquil space. Try a half-moon headboard, an organic-shaped mirror, rounded lighting, or a circular rug. These pieces offer a soft touch without taking-up a lot of square footage.

The best part about the curved craze is that you can get creative and make a space uniquely yours.

Kitchen Upgrades

Looking to update your kitchen? Try implementing some functional and stylish ideas into your next kitchen remodel project. From space saving tips to full blown interior design trends, we’ve compiled these kitchen upgrade ideas tips to help you get the most out of your kitchen.

Upgrade 1: Lighting is everything! A well-lit kitchen feels more welcoming and inviting. Recessed overhead lights will brighten-up the entire space. Add decorative lighting to let your personal home style shine through. We love pendant lamps, which add interest and can make the kitchen feel more grand. They work beautifully above kitchen islands for a subtle yet striking statement.

Upgrade 2: Clever storage. Maximize a kitchen’s footprint for optimal use by adding efficient storage. Invest in a cabinet pull-out pantry equipped with appropriate shelving and mounting options, or cabinet pull-up doors for tight corners and narrow spaces. Shelving and racks keep kitchen items visible while creating a point of interest. Sometimes, it’s what you don’t see that adds the biggest bang, such as internal fittings that help keep drawers tidy. From The Container Store to Hafele, you can organize at the budget that is right for you.

Upgrade 3: Rethink your kitchen cabinetry! Give your cabinet doors and drawers a complete makeover. This can entail swapping outdated cabinets with oak or other wood options, adding a fresh coat of paint or new stain, or turning to a company like Semihandmade that will help create handmade cabinet solutions around Ikea cabinets. Updating your cabinetry will make your kitchen feel fresh and polished. And if revamping them is not an option, consider a new set of hardware. These little touches can make a big difference. There are many different sizes of handles, knobs, and pulls, so pay attention to proportion, and coordinate the finish with overall design for a cohesive look that makes the home current.

Upgrade 4: Celebrate Nature. Natural lighting is one of the best interior design trends. Sunlit spaces immediately make a kitchen feel like the hearth of the home. If you are up for a major overhaul, add a skylight or enlarge windows. Depending on the size and layout of your kitchen, sliding or folding glass doors can turn your kitchen into an indoor outdoor oasis. And if a kitchen renovation isn’t in your plans, outfit it with plants. Wall gardens are perfect for growing edibles and herbs. Succulents make a nice centerpiece on a kitchen island, and indoor trees can tie an open kitchen / great room together.

Upgrade 5: Make your countertops the centerpiece. Counters and kitchen islands are the place to express yourself! Outfitting your kitchen in marble or other natural stone is a bold way to bring in pattern. Marble slabs are available in a variety of veining — from heavy, multi-hued designs to subtle striations — making this material the perfect backdrop for any kitchen. Be it an ultra modern kitchen or a farmhouse style interpretation, you can’t go wrong when upgrading your kitchen counters or waterfall kitchen island with stone.

Interior Design Trends in 2022

This is the year to hit reset on your living space! Whether you are looking to reinvent your entire home or need to create a “me-space”, 2022 is all about living with intention. A chance to balance well-being with personal style. Below are six interior design trends that will continue to make their way into homes across the globe.

  1. Commitment to wellness. It goes without saying, these past two years have been riddled with anxiety. Between the pandemic, crazy weather, and personal trials and tribulations, wellness will be front and center. For the eco-conscious home dweller, this means using healthy materials and products. Eco-friendly paints, such as Portola Paints & Glazes, are low-VOC and made from natural ingredients, helping with better indoor air quality. And they come in earthy, neutral colors which can help calm the nerves! A commitment to wellness also means creating wellness spaces! This can mean turning an unused or underutilized corner of your home into a gym or yoga studio or revamping your bathroom into a spa-like setting. The Jenny Kayne Home SoHo store has many quiet moments, including a soothing soaking tub that can make a home a relaxing oasis.

  2. Serene hues. Consider a statement wall with Calico wallcoverings. Their Colorwash line plays with color and light, bringing in an element of texture. Calming colors can go beyond dressing your walls. Consider reupholstering that couch you’ve been sitting on 24/7 since working from home. And remember, making an interior design statement doesn’t have to be loud. Serene colors can be saturated and still create that soft touch needed to create rejuvenating tranquility.

  3. Wood panel walls. But not your 70’s wood paneling. Wood blocks, arranged Mondrian-like, can add warmth and style. We love this interior architecture project by Studio Liaigre. It is moody, inviting, and comfortable — everything you need to create a stylish, well-appointed room.

  4. Statement pieces: For art aficionados and collectors, statement furniture and decorative art will be the rage. From pendant lamps that double as sculpture to rugs that add intrigue. Apparatus Studio, known for their commanding lighting design, has mesmerizing light fixtures, among other intriguing offerings. cc-tapis, the Italian company which produces contemporary hand-knotted rugs made in Nepal by expert Tibetan artisans, has rugs to match any personality. Square, round, organic. Bold, tranquil, geometric. There’s a rug for every room!

  5. Fluted detailing: We are no strangers to fluted detailing. Fluted wood, fluted glass, and fluted concrete will continue to punctuate kitchens and bathrooms, and every room in between. They not only add dimension, but they also bring in an element of play that is important in today’s world. Architectural designer Rodolphe Parente has a few inspiring projects that feature fluted detailing. We especially like this kitchen decor photographed by Stephan Julliard.

  6. Crisp, clean lines: Streamlined silhouettes seem to never go out of style. These thin shapes are perfect for modern and contemporary interior design schemes. We love this living space by Studio Seiders out of Austin, Texas.

Unexpected Holiday Decorations

Happy holidays! ’Tis the season for decorating. From interior designers to epicureans, lighting manufacturers, ceramicists, florists, and home stores, people and brands are showing off some wonderful decor. We’ve been scouring Instagram for inspiration and have pulled together a collection of posts that will put you in the decorating spirit. Whether you go all out for Christmas or simply add little festive touches, we have ideas for your table, tree, door, and wall. This holiday, try the unexpected!

  • Who says a holiday wreath has to be evergreen and holly? We are especially fond of florist Katie Chirgotis’ wreath designs.

  • Lightening to brighten the holidays! This dynamic wall light by Toronto-based modern furniture & lighting design firm, Hollis and Morris, can be used year round, but it reminded us of the holidays. It’s functional and fun.

  • We never tire of Georg Jensen’s iconic stainless steel HK pitcher. The Danish design is simply stylish. Whether you’re serving Christmas guests or having a New Year’s gathering, this piece stands the test of time. Image from the website, but learn about this gem on their Instgram video.

  • If you do low-key Christmas but still want a stocking, head on over to stationary store, Paper Source. They not only have the best holiday cards and gift tags, they also have adorable felt stockings, and all the stocking stuffers to include. Oh! Did we mention that they have a collection of retro ornaments?

  • Elle Decoration UK never disappoints with their photo shoots. Although this image is a sneek peak from their November shoot, we think it is the perfect blend of modern and vintage. After all, the holidays are about new beginnings and old traditions.

  • If you’re looking for handcrafted objects, check out Virgina Sin.The Brooklyn-based multi-disciplinary designer works magic in clay. Her ornaments will had a crafty touch to any tree.

  • For the more adventurous decorator, who turns the house into a festive masterpiece, we recommend folding in some colorful fabrics. These gem-colored swatches are from Hollywood at Home. They are from the new Tulu Textiles, helmed by Elizabeth Hewitt.

  • And for the foodie, or just the person who is into gingerbread houses, we cannot NOT show you this midcentury modern yummy. An oldie but a goodie (pun intended), we dug this up from Epicurious archives.

Saturated Colors

We saw them on the runways this Fall, and they’ve been popping up at design shows this past year, both virtual and in-person events. Saturated colors. Bright, beautiful colors in darker shades. Pumpkin, moss, azure, blush pink, eggplant. A deeply hued rainbow is making their way into homes across the nation, and across the pond. Some could even say this color-rich interior design trend was popularized in Europe. Artists, fashion designers, and interior designers alike are donning these lovelies in their work. Used as either a primary color or accent, depending on which palette you gravitate towards, there is a saturated tone to match your style. When it comes to renovating your house — be it a complete home make-over or a single room refresh, saturated tones work well with modern and contemporary decor. Below are some brands from the art and design world that are leading the trend.

  1. Italian furniture purveyors Riflessi has mastered the balance between clean, minimal lines and rich colors. Their Cross sideboard, made from thermo-treated oak is available in coke, a warm umber stain. We also like their marigold Meghan die-cast aluminum framed armchair.

  2. Studiopepe, who we wrote about in the past, has a keen sense of color. We love their Ritagli coffee and side tables, made from turquoise marble scraps — a true standout saturated tone!

  3. We discovered pumpkin, moss and mustard colored tables at Paola Lenti. Artist Nicolò Morales is behind some of the exclusive colors.

  4. Beirut design house, T Sakhi, run by sisters known for their playful product design and objets d’art, caught our eye a few years back with their Reconciled Fragments collection — mossy green tables made from resin. Ever since, we’ve been following them. An excellent example of saturated colors can be seen in the Wadi project. Each space strikes a balance with its use of pigment-drenched accessories and accent walls.

  5. Edra, one of our favorite Italian sofa designers has a wonderful outdoor collection, A’mare. Available in a vibrant shade of turquoise, this transparent seating selection is as elegant as it is artistic.

  6. Known for their endless collection of handmade rugs, Marc Phillips excels at blending saturated tones into statement pieces. We love this caramel-heathered rug spied in Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz’s house as featured on Architectural Digest.

A Moment of Zen

In today’s hectic world, achieving a sense of tranquility is not an easy feat. However, you can turn your abode into a relaxing place to escape to. This doesn’t mean you have to feng shui every corner of your house! Although, applying the philosophy of feng shui, that is, designing a space that establishes balance between yourself, your home environment, and the natural world, can help nurture a more peaceful state-of-mind. From an interior design perspective, creating a harmonious house begins with a practical approach that takes into consideration your lifestyle, and marries it with functional and aesthetically-pleasing design element that are an extension of you. Below are five mindful ways that will help you achieve a moment of zen.

1. Select Streamlined Silhouettes: Visual flow and continuity is key to creating a tranquil home environment. Sleek silhouettes with low-profiles keep spaces open and feeling spacious. Opting for comfortable mid-century modern sofas, sleek bed frames, or clean-lined end tables can help you feel more grounded. Rendering: Studio SHK

2. Handpick Harmonious Hues: Achieving a heavenly haven doesn’t necessarily mean neutral. Natural tones — warm whites, moody grays, and sandy beiges — are a great foundation and perfect for your primary color palette. Contemplate adding pops of bold color, be it black, red, purple, etc., or try using soothing shades to create a pleasing effect. Image: Arseniy Karinskiy

3. Soak up the Sunshine: When possible, accentuate the natural light. Bringing in daylight to interior spaces ranges from simple changes to major home renovations. For a quick fix, paint walls or ceilings bright white using a high gloss finish so the sunbeams can reflect throughout. More involved projects may entail overhauling windows, adding glass sliding doors, or removing interior walls that block sunlight from filtering in. When undergoing a major home renovation, pay attention to scale and proportion and your new sun-filled house will feel like an oasis. Image: Swiss Woodworking

4. Use Natural Materials: Connecting to nature is one of the best ways to unwind! Depending on your interior design budget, that could mean renovating your kitchen with wood cabinetry or granite countertops, laying hardwood floors throughout your home, or reupholstering furniture pieces with natural fabrics such as cotton, wool, and leather. And if undergoing a big change isn’t feasible, celebrate nature with decorative accessories. Pillows, throws, and curtains are available in a wide range of natural fabrics and colors. Image: Studio SHK

5. Clamp Down on the Clutter: Love it or leave it? It’s not easy to get rid of cherished items but cutting down on the clutter is a must to conquer mental unrest. Not all of us are minimalists, so getting rid of unused items and tschotzches may prove challenging. To aid in decluttering, invest in organizational interior design items like open shelving units and consoles with cabinets, and add more storage that blends with the interiors, such as mudroom benches and storage ottomans. Timeless Interior Design Trends

Between appointments, installs, and family happenings, we’ve been scouring the internet, from Instagram to Pinterest, and individual websites. We pulled together a few interior design trends that caught our eye. Whether you are embarking on a mini interior remodel or are considering a complete home makeover, these two interior design trends will refresh any space.

Spotted: Dots, spots and full moon shapes are circling the design world. From glazed white penny tiles to rounded furniture, the curved-angles are a mainstay. This timeless shape is perfect for modern make-overs, traditional touches, and eclectic tastes. We love this pink bathroom by Australia architecture firm Winwood McKenzie. We spotted the penny tiles on Architectural Digest. The project dates back a few years, but the look is still relevant. We’re also coveting curved silhouettes and fixtures; they make a subtle yet grand statement. Galerie Glustin in Paris has wonderful moon-shaped chairs. Rooms Studio wildly minimalistic Half Moon Coffee Table is a must. The Aura pendants from Ladies and Gentlemen Studio are simple and versatile and can be hung individually or in clusters. Furniture as art has the ability to transform a space.

Marbled: We never tire of marble. From bathrooms awash in variegated swirls to coffee tables and statement walls abound in natural stone, marble can be maximalist or minimalist. Carpenters Workshop Gallery with outposts in London, Paris, San Francisco and New York, offers wonderful marble collectible design, including marble-topped tables that are juxtaposed with concrete. Instagram is marble eye-candy. We discovered this marble-in-the-raw wet bar on A Designers Mind IG. Pinterest is chock-full of boards with marble. Marble slabs, marble floors, marble baths, marble everything. While we can’t post them all, two rooms stood out. A living rom with a marble wall that was juxtaposed with marble flooring and a marbled-pattern rug. And a kitchen from Da Vinci Lifestyle that features a marble waterfall kitchen island. We also use marble in our projects. Sometimes a little. Sometimes a lot. A bathroom renovation we completed features a heavily veined marble backsplash punctuated with, you guessed it, a round stone fixture.

Both of these trends achieve a laidback sophisticated look that never gets old.

Wet Bar Ideas

It’s officially summer. This means long, sunny days perfect for entertaining, home renovation projects, and stay-cations. One of the best home improvement projects is to create a home bar. But not your standard home bar. We recommend maximizing an unused wall or nook to design a wet bar. These mini bars, equipped with a sink station (that’s what makes them wet) and beverage storage, are terrific home additions. Wet bars can extend the kitchen or dining area, allowing you to serve a cold one, blend a frothy cocktail, or shake a mock-tail without leaving the room. The best wet bars not only add an interior design moment to a space, but they also provide all the functional fixins’ of a regular home bar: wine fridge, shelving and drawers, bar sink, and counter space. And if you are tight on space, or your dedicated entertainment area is not plumbing-ready, a dry bar or rolling bar cart is the next best thing.

We’ve pulled together some tips to designing a wet bar, as well as rounded up some inspirational photos and ideas.

Concept: Decide the vibe of your wet bar. Are you going for moody and modern, swinging 70’s, traditional or contemporary?

Color Palette: Blend the home bar with the room’s decor. Choose colors and materials that will complement the surrounding area.

Lighting: Lighting is key to making this space function well and look great. Factor in ambient, task and accent lighting.

Barware Storage: Coordinate cabinetry, shelving and hardware with other aspects of the room to create a seamless look.

Appliances: Opt for a wine captain or beverage fridge; glass doors will highlight options without having to open the refrigerator while wine racks allow you to handsomely display your vintners.

Sink and Faucet: Have fun with sink colors and finishes.

Countertop and Backsplash: Since this is a relatively small are, feel free to splurge on materials and design! Heavily-veined granite, moody marble, engineered quartz, or tiled laid out in an eye-catching pattern can create a focal point.

Patio Spaces

It’s outdoor season. With the warmer weather upon us, it’s time to spruce up your backyard. Whether you’re looking to maximize your indoor-outdoor lifestyle, add more privacy to your patio, bring an element of fun to your deck, or make your outdoor oasis more comfortable and functional, we’ve pulled together some of our favorite brands and styles to help ready your home for the great outdoors.

Belgium-based Tribù is our go-to for contemporary outdoor furniture. Their designs are luxurious but discreet. We are currently coveting the Nodi chair designed by Yabu Pushelber. The light and airy seat is defined by twisted-interlaced rope made from PVC and hemp, overlaid on a wireframe silhouette. It’s perfect for creating a modern outdoor dining space.

If you’re looking for outdoor lounge furniture, Italian purveyor Paola Lenti has a playful yet sophisticated offering, including couches and side chairs The Ami collection, designed by F. Rota, features rope chord detailing. Love seats pair nicely with ottomans. Curved high-back seats provide a bit of privacy. Available in jewel tones, these gems will add a touch of festive flair to garden grounds and elegant vibrancy to verandas. To create an even more playful backyard destination, opt for one of their suspended chairs. Adagio is their version of a single swing and Wabi will gentle sway two comfortably.

Another Italian brand we love is Exteta. Plush, modern shapes bring in a sense of comfort and coziness. The Levante Sofa is a structural piece designed by Massimo Castagna; perfect for beachside retreats and country homes. We also like Castagna’s Panarea Collection. It’s a little more refined and available in a contrasting weave which gives it a regal touch.

Our last insider tip for European outdoor furniture is DDC. With showrooms in New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Miami, it’s easy to transform your patio into a stylish space accustomed by those admired for their joie de vivre. The Shibui series consists of a chaise lounge, armchair and various platform beds, made from turned bamboo that has been treated with water-based protectants. These pieces are ideal for cabanas and trellis-covered spaces. Sleek, sexy and unexpected.

Bye Bye Blank Walls: Wallpaper Trends

Staring at a bare wall got you down? A blank wall can make a room feel unfinished and the entire interior space feel boring. Your home may need a wallpaper makeover.  Whether you favor striking patterns and daring color combinations or subtle textures awash in monochromatic hues, consider decorating your walls with a wallcovering to match your personal style. Wallpaper can be used for a statement wall, a tiny nook, or it can transform an entire room into a vibrant area with every inch designed with exacting detail. The latest wallcovering trends run the gamut. From bold botanical prints to natural grasscloths, 3D texture and gorgeous geometrics. Panoramic murals, including handprinted and hand-painted, make the possibilities of covered walls even more intriguing. So whether you’re renovating your home or engaged in a new construction project, be it a city condo or a seaside estate, wallpaper will give your blank walls the zest they deserve.

If you want a little texture to dress up bare walls, de Gournay’s slub silk wallcovering, made from 100% silk thread, comes in a variety of rich colors. This wallpaper is perfect for classical and minimal designs alike. The subtle knotted texture adds a touch of opulence and warmth to an interior space. They also have a wonderful selection of mural-like wallpaper, including their coveted Chinoiserie Collection.

Love the hand-painted look but not ready to hire an artist or muralist? Porter Teleo has an expansive collection of hand-painted wallpaper. Their Ink Blots pattern, reminiscent of a Rorschach test, is a conversation starter. The organic forms create an alluring pattern, perfect for entertaining guests. And if you’re not ready to commit to an all-over wallpaper pattern, they offer a collection of richly pigmented artist hues, akin to a hand-painted plaster wall.

Looking to pack a panoramic punch to your room? Rebel Walls is our go to source for wallpaper murals. Their original designs will turn a white box room into an imaginative interior design adventure. Whether you gravitate towards pastel florals, whimsical nature scenes, tantalizing tropicals or sexy Art Deco, their designs will add a unique interior design dimension to your home.

For a more subtle wall mural or an all-around splash of color, Aurora by Calico Wallpaper is a high-design solution. We used the Ray colorway in our Exploration Kid’s Bedroom. We wrapped the walls in the pink-coral-azure ombre wallpaper to depict the dawn-lit sky. The wallpaper sets the tone for the decorated kids room, adding a skosh of sophistication among the playful setting.

For a truly unique interior design experience, commission an artist to create a one-of-a-kind mural. We tapped award-winning graphic artist Cody Blocker to paint a safari scene to our kid’s bedroom. To make the walled landscape come to life, he hand-painted silhouetted Sahara Desert animals and shrub trees. We also love decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga’s work. She knows how to bring natural stone to painted life.

Wallpaper is not just for indoor walls! External walls and facades can also be transformed. We love the bespoke outdoor designs from Wall & Deco. Their fluted wall covering, made from printed fiberglass and a waterproof primer, will turn an outdoor area into a highly decorated space with strong visual impact.

Trend Alert: Fluted Detailing

Interior design has always recalled history. Rooted in a study of color, texture, proportion and light, the craft of interior designers is building relationships between architectural elements to create a sense of harmony. The latest interior design trend to capture this rhythm in design is fluting — a set of grooves or vertical channels that create a texture-rich decorative surface. Fluted detailing traces back to ancient woodworking practices and was popularized in the classical period. Known to promote the interplay of shadow and light, fluted columns dominated ancient Greek and Roman architecture. During the Art Deco movement, fluted detailing permeated interior design, the decorative arts, and architecture. Today, fluting has been revived! Fluted wood, fluted stone, fluted plaster, fluted glass … most materials can be fluted. We’re coveting the trend and excited to bring a bit of flair to our interior remodel projects. Currently, we’re working on a kitchen remodel with fluted wood cabinets, and are exploring ways to integrate fluted texture into other areas of the home. Check out some of our design inspiration.

Our favorite Italian purveyor of luxury stone, Salvatori, has mastered fluted detailing in every corner of the home. Nothing is off limits. Floors, walls, vanities, bathtubs, drawers, shelves, wash basins. Photos: Salvatori

On this side of the pond, Artistic Tile blends the moodiness of marble with the elegant lines of fluted detailing. Check out their fluted tile collection, which comes in two color ways. Photo: Artistic Tile

Sneak peek. Our Newport Beach kitchen renovation will be a composition of rich layers and textures. We’re getting swanky with materials. We’re pairing fluted wood cabinets with either quartz or marble, and using a mirrored tile as backsplash. Plus, we’re adding fluted detailing for the fireplace. The house, once owned by an Art Deco loving actress, inspired the use of honed stone dimensional tiles from Artistic Tile. We’ll let you know when the bar is open for cocktails and the fire is softly burning! Elevation: Studio SHK

The Ultimate Spa-Like Bath

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but the bathroom is the soul. To create the ultimate at-home spa, consider updating your bathroom into a one-of-a-kind luxury experience. The delight is in the interior design details. Explore these luxurious bathroom fixtures, fittings, and accessories, and turn your home into a luxury stay. With a new bathroom design, staying at home can feel more like staying at a five-star resort.

Spa Treatment Shower: The Horizontal shower ATT from Dornbracht is true decadence. During a private tour at their German facility (before the stay-at-home orders), I was lucky to experience this six-headed shower. Just as they promised, water gently fell without pressure, washing away tension and stress. If you want to pamper yourself, this is the crème de la crème of bath treatments.

Stylish Spa Sink: While you can unwind under the waterfall shower heads and cascading streams, a simple, elegant sink will further the spa-experience. Currently, we are coveting Italian brand, Salvatori. They have a beautiful line of basin sinks made from natural stone, available in wall-mounted and freestanding styles. If you’re drawn to the allure moody marble or prefer sandstone’s soothing hues, these architectural sinks will create a strong yet soothing statement.

Tasteful Tiles: If you’re looking to design an opulent bath, marble is a must. But you can also achieve a sophisticated look by layering materials. Mixing natural woods, stone slabs, and patterned tile will add an dimension and a certain je ne sais. You can’t go wrong with Salvatori’s textured stone wall and floor tiles. Stateside, our go-to is Ann Sacks and Artistic Tile. Both offer a variety of styles, materials, and colors, from majestic slabs to marvelous mosaics.

Flawless Fittings: Don’t let your bathroom remodel go sideways with lack-luster plumbing fixtures. Available in an array of forms, styles, and finishes, you can create a luxury spa-bath that fits your personality. Whether you’re going for a modern gem, a bold look, or want to add a traditional touch, there’s a faucet to fit the look. Both Waterworks and Watermark Designs have a variety of luxury plumbing, including marble offerings such as hot and cold taps, and matching accessories.

With the right bath, staying at home can feel more like staying and a five-star luxury resort.

Trend Alert: Integrated Bathroom Sink

Not quite ready for an entire home remodel?  A bathroom renovation is a great first step to designing your dream home. Whether you’re imagining a new master bath or a beautiful powder room, we have a few tips to make the “mini” residential remodel go the extra mile. Skip the decorative vessel sink, forgo the floating sink, and opt for the integrated sink. The what? An integrated sink is a countertop with a built-in sink, both made from the same material. It’s a perfect solution for contemporary and modern bathrooms, and also works well for transitional styles.

We love this residential design look because using one material creates a smooth, seamless appearance. As modernists say, form follows function. From a functional standpoint, the integrated bathroom sink is easy-to-clean. The seams are hardly visible, alleviating the potential for soap scum and water to build up on the surface. Aesthetically, the overall look of the integrated sink and vanity feels more pleasing. There are endless design possibilities. Available in a variety of material (porcelain, marble, stainless steel, concrete, solid surface) and an array of bowl styles, sizes and shapes, the integrated sink presents the perfect opportunity to show off your personal style. Plus, going with an integrated sink can streamline the remodeling process (two for one material), create a unified backdrop for plumbing fixtures and faucets, and make a statement. Be it bold, understated or simply sleek, the integrated sink offers lasting benefits for years to come.

6 Design Tips to Maximize Any Kind of Space

City-dwellers have long grappled with making their homes feel bigger. Be it a pied-à-terre or their primary residence, most of our clients want to maximize their square footage. This is especially true in smaller homes where each room needs to work smarter due to space constraints. Below are six tips to help maximize any kind of space.

1. Open Plan Concept: Big or small, in terms of maximizing square footage, opt for an open plan concept where the kitchen island doubles as dining and work stations, spilling onto adjacent seating areas for easy entertaining. Open plans can help extend the space and remove the boxed in feeling.

2. Transformable Furniture: For smaller spaces, to further maximize the footprint, we recommend transformable furniture. To create more negative space, put in less single-purpose furniture, and source pieces that are multifunctional. For a condo project, we’re considering an adjustable height coffee table that turns into a standard table. This will alleviate the need for a dining table and chairs. We’re also looking at couches where you can move the backs around. A common challenge is, how do you orient seating arrangements to get the most out of your space. Do you orient towards the TV or the view. By using smart, stylish furniture, you can take advantage of both!

3. Less is More: Paring down can be hard to do but editing your furniture and decorative accessories is a must. Avoid cramming! If your living room or den isn’t large enough, once less chair will make all the difference.

4. Spa-Like Bath: When embarking on a bathroom renovation, consider making it feel like a spa experience and a place of refuge, versus a utilitarian space. Rain head showers and deep soak tubs can turn a bath into a spa.

5. Rethink the Sink: For smaller projects, ask yourself, do I really need two sinks and all that plumbing? Negative space can make a bathroom feel bigger. Challenge yourself to rethink the sink.

6. Colored Ceilings. Painting your ceiling another color, other than white, won’t make your space look smaller. Ditch the white ceilings for a more expressive color that fits into the overall scheme.

Accessible Design is Having a Moment. Check out these 7 Design Tips to ready your family.

While some of us isolate, others are hunkering down with aging family members, keeping them safe. Coupled with the aging population, accessible design is having a moment. As the nuclear family becomes extended, our favorite design trends are ripe for the stay-at-home policy. Below are 7 tips, ranging from major renovation moves to simple furniture arrangements, to keep the family together, while alone.

1. Let it Breathe: We led a home renovation for a septuagenarian couple, keeping the house uncluttered. We made sure the elements had room to breathe so the couple could easily walk around the furniture.

2. Dual-Purpose Space: With many of us working from home, create spaces that can serve as comfortable desk areas. Coffee tables and nightstands are also a good substitute!

3. Declutter: If you have a hard time parting with stuff, add more storage to aid in decluttering. Kitchen island cabinets are the perfect place for all kinds of cherished and practical items.

4. Sliding Doors: Much easier to enter and exit a bathroom with sliding doors! For this bath, an attractive barn door easily opens and shuts.

5. Overhead Lights: Install overhead lights for improved nighttime visibility. They can be stylishly incorporated with skylights, which flood the space with natural light during the day.

6. Walk-in Showers: Easy in. Easy out. Make large enough to accommodate a seat.

7. Raise the Floor: The intent of a recent project for a multigenerational household was to establish a space that would accommodate the needs of the grandparents whose mobility is limited, while affording the family of four, to live an active lifestyle. That meant deconstructing the galley kitchen to a more appropriate scale and raising the sunken living room to meet the kitchen floor for ease-of-use.

The San Francisco Fall Show

Earlier this month, Sherry attended the opening night preview gala of 38th Annual San Francisco Fall Art & Antiques Show, the leading international art, antiques, and design fair on the West Coast. Held at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, guests were decked out in chic, festive themed "Wanderlust" attire as they shopped more than 50+ fine and decorative arts dealers from around the world. The event was a fundraiser for Enterprise for Youth, a nonprofit that empowers young people to prepare for and discover career opportunities.
